Al Hajar Mountain Tour

Separating the coastal plains from the desert plateau of Oman, Al Ajar Mountains in North Eastern Oman about 50 to 100 km inland from the Gulf of Oman runs for 500 km from the Musandam Peninsula to Ras al Hadd in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate. It is divided into Eastern and Western sections by Wadi Samali. The central part of the mountain range known as Jebel Akhdar rises to 2,980 metres and is known for its cool and sometime rainy climate and wild terrain. The mountains are considered an important eco region being the only part in eastern Arabia 2,000 metres above sea level and with a rich collection of flora and fauna that change with the altitude. The mountains have some of Oman’s major historical sites, they are the country’s agricultural base and for centuries the mountains kept out invaders from central Oman.

While many parts of the mountains are accessible from the capital Muscat on normal modes of transport, the remote and rugged areas can only be explored on a 4×4. Regular tours from Muscat cover the town of Misfat Al Abriyeen that is known for its date terraces and mud brick houses teetering on the edge of cliffs. Jebel Akhdar or Green Mountain, the highest part of Al Hajar though reachable from Muscat in a two hour journey, is rugged and needs a 4X4. This part of the mountain is a sight for sore eyes with waterfalls and terraced slopes cultivated with pomegranates, figs, apples, grapes, almonds, olives trees, fields of saffron and best of all acres and acres of roses on the Saiq Plateau that can be smelled before being seen, cultivated here to make rosewater.

Other interesting and historic sites on the mountain include the old capitals of Nizwa and Rustaq, Jabal Shams the highest point in the mountain range where vestiges of civilization is still discernible, deserted Al Hamra or Red Town and Samali where Islam was first introduced to Oman. An Nakhr Balcony near the top of Jabal Shams is where visitors stop to catch a glimpse of the deep ravine known as the Grand Canyon of Oman.

Canoeing in Kalu Ganga

Kalu Ganga excursions are part of the eco-tourism industry which is popular in Sri Lanka. The country is blessed with fascinating natural environments that are waiting to be explored. Visitors to the country will be amazed by the diversity of the landscape in such a small island. There are beautiful coastal areas, chilly mountains, scenic rivers, picturesque waterfalls and a whole lot more to travel to, all within the same country. A delightful way to spend your day out in the sun is by taking a Kalu Ganga canoeing trip. Located just outside the Ratnapura district is the alluring Kalu Ganga. The waters are deep and tinted brown; they are relatively calm which means that it is safe to ride on a canoe.

At the beginning of your canoeing trip you will encounter the riverside village of Kiriella. It is easy to navigate through the waters because they are not rough and choppy. Once you pass Kiriella you can catch a glimpse of the Ratnapura town. Ratnapura is popular for the gem industry and the name translated refers to the ‘City of Gems’. Since it is a provincial district the atmosphere is rather laidback. Most of the people in Ratnapura live alongside the river as it provides water for the fields and fish for the community. When you go downstream you may witness some locals involved in fishing. There are also people who travel from one end of the river to the other side via a raft.

The lush vegetation surrounding the river is something to look forward to seeing. You will see beautiful pink lotuses and on the riverbed and rows of tall bamboo trees. If you are a bird lover you will enjoy spotting the various birds that dwell along the riverside. Since the river runs from Ratnapura to Kalutara a Sri Lanka beach hotel on the South Coast will provide access to it. A Kalutara hotel is an ideal option especially those that offer river safaris at an affordable rate for guests. Mermaid Hotel & Club can be recommended for tourists who are searching for a calm and quiet place to stay in. Set in a cosy fishing village, the hotel has luxurious rooms with amazing views of the beach.

Speed Boat Rides in Maldives

The Republic of Maldives is replete with a multitude of activities designed to thrill the eager tourist. While those who seek a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday will wish to sunbathe by the beach listening to the soothing sounds of the Indian Ocean, the curious tourist will have opportunities to explore the neighbouring islands and experience new underwater ocean experiences. For the more adventurous, who seek to explore and live for the rush of adrenaline, diving with sharks and hammerheads would be an ideal encounter. When in Maldives, there is truly something for everyone, young or old.

However, when it comes to travelling around these islands in order to engage in such activities, tourists will have to choose from a variety of travel options. ‘Dhoni’ charters, for instance, can usually be chartered from the capital city of Male to any of the nearby islands. These ‘dhoni’s can be chartered for a simple ride from the airport to your resort island, or can be chartered for an entire day and used to explore the islands at leisure. However, if you need to charter a ‘dhoni’, the best option is to initially make your way to Male for a large number of ‘dhonis’ can found in the harbour of the island. Tourists also have the option of climbing aboard a ‘vedi’, a wooden boat-like structure that was originally used for trade. These ‘vedis’ tend to be quite basic in nature but will get you to where you need to go.

For those in a hurry, or wish to get their destination as soon as possible, speedboats are the best option. Speedboats can usually be hired for a range of prices and are usually the mode of transportation used by tourists to travel to their Maldives resort from the airport. For the convenience of tourists, most accommodation in Maldives offer to arrange a speedboat for airport transfers. Therefore, ensure that you make inquiries from your hotel prior to booking a speedboat privately. These rides offer an adrenaline filled journey where you can enjoy the wind in your hair, the sun on your back and the thrill of speeding along azure waters with an endless horizon ahead. For those who choose to reside at Anantara Dhigu Maldives, the hotel can arrange for guests to use the Naladhu Raanee, a swift speedboat, to travel from the hotel to the airport and vice versa.

Of course you should not try such excursions unaccompanied and one must make sure not to tread on live coral either.
