Experiencing Yi Peng & Loy Krathong in Thailand

Two lantern festivals that are popular in Thailand, Loy Krathong and Yi Peng are truly spellbinding to witness and here’s more on what you need to know.

Loy Krathong

This is the name given to a water lantern festival in Thailand that falls on the full moon of the local lunar calendar’s 12th month, normally November. ‘Loy’ translates to ‘float’, while ‘krathong’ is in reference to a floating object or container. Thus, it’s no surprise that the key element of this event is the krathong which is traditionally made from the bark of a banana tree; on this small krathong, an incense stick or candle is placed, before being sent down a waterway, generally at night.

Making a Wish

Each person will launch one of these floating lanterns which can also contain food, flowers or garlands and at the same time make a wish in the hope it will be granted; some also consider it symbolic of sending their problems ‘floating’ away. As you would expect, the waterways throughout the country become places to see and join in the traditions of Loy Krathong. This not only includes cities like Bangkok, but destinations such as Koh Samui; 5-star hotels on the island including SAii Koh Samui Choengmon are within easy reach of sites such as Chaweng Lake, one of the places to experience this festival.

Yi Peng

An equally captivating and visually stunning festival, Yi Peng is more popular in Northern Thailand since it’s a traditional Lanna (ancient northern kingdom) festival. It takes place on the full moon of the second month according to the Lanna lunar calendar; ‘yi’ translates to ‘two’ and ‘peng’ means ‘full moon day’. Interestingly, it coincides with the date of Loy Krathong so both festivals are celebrated on the same day; however, the key difference is that for Yi Peng, the lanterns float not on the water but up in the air!

A Magical Sight

On this day, people will gather in one place to release what are called ‘khom loi’ which are special lanterns with a flame that makes them float into the night sky against the backdrop of a full moon. By releasing the lanterns, one symbolically releases the misfortunes of the year, while some may write a wish on them believing it will come true. Chiang Mai is one of the best places to witness the stunning spectacle of Yi Peng with the Three Kings Monument being a prime spot. It’s celebrated at other locations and visitors can join too as well as enjoy parades and other cultural events.

Snorkeling in The Maldives

The Maldives is home to numerous water sports – and snorkelling and surfing are two of the most popular water sports around the year.

Best time to snorkel

Snorkelling is a water sport that will allow you to explore the shallow waters in the sea, and this will enable you to swim with schools of colourful fish, turtles, and sometimes even stingrays. Whilst this is an activity you can do around the year, the best time to go snorkelling in the Maldives is from November to February.

Where to go snorkelling

Male is the most popular place to go snorkelling for locals, but you can also do this at other islands in different atolls. Addu atoll and Lhaviyani atoll are two of the best locations to snorkel when you are in the Maldives.

How to learn

World-class luxurious resorts like the OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI, home to a host of Maldives Luxury Villas, have private beaches. If you are willing to learn, there are many schools that teach different water sports. There are shops where you can rent the necessary gear, so you do not have to worry about purchasing goggles and other items.

What to expect

Depending on where you are snorkelling, you can spot sting rays, manta rays, parrotfish, clownfish, blacktip reef sharks, Moorish idols, and a range of other fish.

Be respectful

If you are staying at Dao by Dorsett AMTD Singapore or even perhaps at a 1 bedroom serviced apartment in Singapore, there are going to be rules and regulations and even though you might not agree with them it is important to be respectful.

Chinatown

Chinatown is a must-visit location in Singapore especially when you are travelling alone. You will be able to spend time looking at things that interest you and even try out different types of food you find exciting. When in a group, you are not always able to stop and observe each and everything you see.

Little India

Little India is another exciting place to explore. You can not only shop for hours on end but also meet people, interact with them, and even learn new things.

Where Can You Stay?

Are you looking through all the hotels in Doha wondering which of them to check in to? Resorts such as Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels By Tivoli and many others offer guests unparalleled comforts as well as central stays. So, pick your hotel based on your budget, itinerary and your preference of location.

What is a Dhow Cruise?

It is a traditional wooden boat which was steered by sailors, which is unique to Doha. Apart from its wooden frame, what set it apart was the two triangular sails which had pointed ends for the bow and the stern. However modern designs have one large sail which has been proven to be more powerful and efficient.

Dinner on the Dhow

Set off at dusk and enjoy watching the sun dip into the still waters of the Arabian Gulf. Dinner cruises are a wonderful way to take in the views of the city skyline from a unique perspective as well. Admire the glittering skyline from the waters while you make some unforgettable memories on your holiday in Doha.

Ang Thong National Park

Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park, an archipelago of 42 islands encompassing 102 km2 at the shore of the Surat Thai Province east of Ko Samui in the Gulf of Thailand, was established as a marine national park in 1980. Here are some facts to keep in mind when you’re planning your visit here.

Visiting

You can only enter the park with a licenced tour operator. You can hire a tour boat as a group and decide your schedules and destinations within the park. Foreigners will have to pay an entrance fee of 100 – 200 baht. The park opens at 08/;00 hours daily except from 20th October to the 20th of December every year.

Staying

You can either opt to stay at the on-site camping area in Ko Wua Ta or book a resort in Koh Samui. If you’re staying at the campsite you have to make your bookings through the official website well in advance and payments need to be made in full. If you opt for a Koh Samui luxury hotel such as the famous SAii Koh Samui Choengmon you can make your bookings leisurely, and can book excursions leisurely to Ang Thong.

Activities

From the adjoining islands, day trips to the islands and the surrounding waterways are common places to go snorkelling, canoeing or kayaking, enjoying the beaches, hiking, and other activities. On arriving on the island, it is simple to make arrangements with one of the many tour companies that offer both group and private tours to the islands.

Wildlife

On larger islands, the woods are mostly made up of dry evergreen trees, along with limestone forests and a small number of planted mangroves near the beaches and bays. Only at Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park can one find the endemic species of plant known as the Ang Thong Lady’s Slipper Orchid. Currently, only a small number of animal species have been reported from the park: 16 mammals, roughly 50 birds, 14 reptiles, and 5 amphibian species have been discovered on the islands, but it’s very likely that the majority of the amphibian and reptile species discovered on Ko Samu and Ko Phang Nga are also present in the park.

Visit the City of Da Nang to Witness a Fire-Breathing Dragon – Myths come to life in Da Nang

Da Nang city is well known for the stunning Dragon bridge that brings together visitors from the neighbouring suburbs as well as the visitors who enjoy the night-time view of the city skyline.

How is the Dragon Bridge constructed?

Iron and concrete combine to form the bridge, which has six lanes to accommodate the high volume of traffic. Roughly half a mile long, with a span of about 40 yards, the bridge is made up of 8,000 tonnes. What makes this bridge so unique? It can change colour, breathe fire, and even change its shape!

The story behind the bridge

Over 85 million dollars was spent on constructing the Dragon Bridge, an American-designed monument, to commemorate the 38th anniversary of the Vietnam War’s end. Da Nang’s port city has slowly transformed into a new commercial and cultural hub since it finally launched in 2013.

When to visit the bridge

If you are on any Hoi An travel and are onboard The Vietage, you will have the stunning opportunity to enjoy a unique perspective on this landmark in all its glory.

Another layer to the Dragon Bridge

In addition to facilitating mobility between Han River districts, the bridge’s goal was to attract tourists. The dragon has been a beloved symbol of the Far East since ancient times, and this useful piece of art is a tribute to that tradition.
