Camels to the fore!

The sight of these awkward creatures huffing and puffing towards the finish line, stirring up clouds of dust is truly a sight to behold. Held during the winter season, camel racing is a popular sport among Abu Dhabi citizens. In order not to miss it, it is important that the ideal Abu Dhabi resort is booked in advance. Among the many Abu Dhabi beach hotels, a much preferred place of lodging among many is the Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara conveniently located in the middle of all the activities.

Camel racing had been part and parcel of the country’s culture and history for a very long time. Held twice a year, special tracks specifically made for camel racing have been constructed all over the city to facilitate this rather queer and exciting past time of the people. These magnificent creatures are much cherished by the Emiratis as over the years they have become the very symbols of protection, food, heat and friendship in the harsh desert life. It is also a queer sight to see small robot figures kept on the camels’ back to replace jockeys, a fine melange between tradition and technology perfectly mingling within the races.

Bani Yas Island

The Bani Yas Island is a large island situated approximately two hundred and fifty kilometres off the United Arab Emirate’s capital, Abu Dhabi. Measuring roughly eleven miles in length and about six miles at its widest point, the island is the biggest island belonging to the country. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a former ruler of the country, established a wildlife reserve in the island in 1971. Spanning an area of around eighty four square kilometres, it was the biggest wildlife reserve in the region. The island is currently home to an astonishing amount of greenery and a large population of free roaming wildlife.

Not only is Bani Yas Island a place of exceptional beauty it also provides visitors with plenty of things to do. Going on a safari is one of the most popular activities on the island. The park is home to a variety of exotic wildlife (almost thirty species of mammals), many of which are classified as endangered. Visitors to the island will get to see Arabian Oryx, Barbary Sheep, Urial Sheep, Sea Turtles and Sand Gazelles as well as a large variety of birds. Some animals, such as the Arabian Oryx, would be extinct if not for the intensive conservative work performed by the park workers. Other activities to try out at Bani Yas Island include hiking, trekking, mountain biking, archery, kayaking and snorkelling.

Abu Dhabi is quickly becoming one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Middle East. It has become popular with tourists looking for an authentic Arab experience. Known for its excellent infrastructure, the emirate is a treat to visit. However, despite all its development, the emirate is a car oriented region at heart and although public transport is quite good it is somewhat limited. Until recent times, the scorching day time temperatures of Abu Dhabi made any formation of large bodies of frozen water an extreme improbability. But for this city that extracts black gold from its sands to become one of the wealthiest cities in the world, the improbable is not impossible! The Ice Rink of the Zayed Sports City is an example of how such deeds can happen in this oasis at the edge of the Empty Quarter.

The special ‘Learn to Skate’ programme offers coached lessons – individual and group – for beginners of all ages. Although you may fall down a couple of time in the precarious edges of skates, a few lessons with professionals are sure to have you gliding on ice, like it was second nature.

Once you are on your feet and moving smoothly, skating enthusiasts can try out figure skating. The Abu Dhabi Figure Skating Team, based at the rink, teaches the artful yet athletic movements to members. They can prepare you for the Desert Open Figure Skating Championship and other such local and international competitions or just appreciate the graceful musical interpretations for fitness.

The gigantic structure of Zayed Sports City is also where you will find the Abu Dhabi Ice Sports Club, an amateur group of ice hockey players. The youth programmes are open for youngsters with all levels of skill to learn and enjoy one of the fastest and most exhilarating sports in the world.
